Community Development

"Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much." - Helen Keller

Development Team

The BNAC Development Team provides the opportunity for previously disadvantaged athletes to join BNAC, with costs such as kit, various race entries and other running related costs covered by the club.

Community Initiatives

Every year BNAC hosts a number of running events, the proceeds of which are donated to various community intitiatives in and around Benoni.

Community Directory

Our BNAC community directory provides details of club members offering services from Attorneys to Veterinarians. All with the intention of supporting our fellow club members and building our community.

Development Team

Benoni Northerns Athletics Club (BNAC) is committed to the development of athletics as a sport. The Development Team within the existing club serves to provide the opportunity for previously disadvantaged athletes to partake in long-distance running events as a member of BNAC.

The 2020 Development team club is made up of 25 members. The majority of the team is training for the Comrades Marathon while others are athletes who specialise in other distances and disciplines; including walkers.

Supporting a single development club member to get to the Comrades Marathon costs the club in the region of R9000 per runner. These costs include license fees, race entries, kits and running shoes. Parties who are interested in supporting our Development programme are encouraged to be in contact with us or to make a donation here

In particular, if your business is looking for an opportunity to expand its support to social development initiatives, be in touch to discuss how your support of the programme can be included in your BBBEE scorecard.

The implementation of the Development Programme is guided by the BNAC Development Policy which can be downloaded here.

Tag Fun Run

Every March, the people of Benoni, together with their fur babies can be seen out and about supporting our TAG Fun Run fundraiser. The Animal Guardians (TAG) is a non-profit animal shelter located in Rynfield. The shelter was started to assist animals in underprivileged areas. The shelter promotes education in proper animal care, which they believe goes a long way in preventing cruelty. They also provide sterilisations to animals in the community.

The next TAG Fun Run is scheduled for:

Date: 21 March 2020

Time: 8am

Place: Benoni Northerns Athletics Club

Cost: R60 per human; 4 legged friends are FREE

BNAC Golf Day

BNAC hosts an annual golf day at the Benoni Country Club (BCC) in October. Funds raised from the golf day are used to support the BNAC Development Squad. We encourage members and local businesses to sponsor holes, prizes and the legendary booze hamper which is raffled at the prizegiving.

Nelson Mandela Day Blanket Run

In celebration of Nelson Mandela Day, BNAC hosts the annual Nelson Mandela Day Blanket Run where runners take to the roads for 67 minutes. Entry to the run is the donation of a blanket. Each year our blanket run is well supported by members and the community alike, ensuring that the less fortunate in our community are offered the small comfort of a warm blanket to get them through the winter months.

Child Welfare Christmas Run

The Child Welfare Christmas Run, usually done in early December, is an eagerly anticipated run for both club members and the children supported by the Benoni Child Welfare. In the weeks leading up to the Christmas run, members donate non-perishables, detergents, and other products needed by Child Welfare.

Members, all dressed in white, meet at the club to take a short, “chilled” run to Child Welfare, led by bakkies filled with donations. The children stand along the road armed with paint powder ready to pelt runners with the powder. The squeals of delight and flurry of colour that fills the street outside the Child Welfare on the morning of the BNAC Child Welfare Christmas run makes this run a “not-to-be-missed” event.

Richard's Pub Run

A well organised pub run is an annual event, held in December, that is well attended by many a Benonian. The event is organised by long time legend of the club Richard Pretorius to raise funds for a selected charity. Participants purchase t-shirts, the proceeds of which are donated to the selected charity. The runners then set off from a local pub in Benoni, and work their way through a series of pubs, along a well thought out route – that ensures refreshments are plentiful and the opportunity to hydrate is frequent.
